An album that local Afro-Cuban musician Alex Cuba recorded in his basement in Smithers during the pandemic just won the 2022 Grammy Award for best Latin pop album.
“Unbelievable,” Cuba said in a video on his Facebook. “I’m so happy beyond words.”
Cuba learned of the while he was driving during a snowstorm from the Okanagan to Smithers.
“What a surreal moment, man,” he told the Canadian Press.
Other winners included the Weeknd and Joni Mitchell.
“Congrats my friend and to your entire family here and in Cuba,” Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen tweeted.
“Wow—I just heard that the incredible Alex Cuba has won his first Grammy!” Skeena MP Taylor Bachrach wrote. “The whole Northwest is proud of your achievement.”
People are going wild for the Skeena musician on Facebook.
“Never doubted that you would have a Grammy one day,” wrote one fan. “And this is only the beginning! So happy for you!”
