This is a pretty unusual year for camping.
Due to the coronavirus, campers from outside B.C. aren’t allowed at provincial park campgrounds. But the municipal Ferry Island campground in Terrace is going against the trend and allowing visitors from all over the country.
“Based on the latest recommendations from the provincial government, the City of Terrace will move to the next step in re-opening the Ferry Island campground,” said a City of Terrace Leisure Services news bulletin that was reported on by the Terrace Standard.
“Smart, safe and respectful travel is now permitted in B.C., so Ferry Island campground is now open for all Canadian residents.”
There are a few rules that go along with that. Campers have to stay at least two-metres away from strangers and only one motor-home, tent or trailer is allowed per camping site. But that’s still relatively lenient compared to some other campgrounds.
A few weeks ago, several Albertans were threatened with arrest and kicked out of the White Swan Provincial Park campground by the RCMP. The current rules say that only B.C. residents can stay at the province’s campgrounds this summer to slow the spread of Covid-19.
“The health and safety of our BC Parks staff, park operators and visitors continue to be our top priority. We are all in this together,” BC Parks said in a statement in May.
